Ninth Letter: Spring/Summer 2012, Vol. 9, No. 1.

This was the second issue I worked on as a student designer. I was most involved with the art direction and production of the illustrations for the article "For Sons with Apples in Their Hands". We created a three-photo series where the events in the fictional story are acted out, but with BEARS. We set up three-dimensional scenes to show the story of a family in Appalachia, working in the coal mines, with touches of fairy tale throughout. The whimsical treatment gave the serious story a feeling of humanity, and played with the reader's expectations.
